Master Of Complication

The much hyped and eagerly awaited 'Master Of Complication EP' by Club Cheval's Canblaster is finally here! This concept record, on the subject of time, speed and complexity of watches really showcases Cédric Steffens' versatile and ultra-melodic production style, with tracks ranging from 132 all the way up to 180BPM touching on so many different musical genres. This is clearly a huge record for Nightshifters, and they have once again gone all out with remixes, signing up Para One & Teki Latex and Bambounou for their own interpretations of their fellow Frenchman's tracks, and Nightshifters family Magnum and Jubilee who bring their own tastes of breaks, acid and UK bass to the package. Holy Mountain

Nightshifters bring us the first of their 'new school' of producers this week with a brand new EP from latest signing Talk. Talk aka Daniel Lewis has his ears towards dubstep, gutter house, grime and tech-house  scenes and this EP takes aspects of all those genres, along with the ideas to push his sound further with a fantastic 4 track debut, featuring a great mix of tracks. As if these hot 4 originals weren't enough, in true Nightshifters fashion a renegade band of producers have yet again been brought together to remix the EP with great work from Distal, Skinnz, Deathface and LOL Boys. Nightshifters: Selections One


'Selections One' is a retrospective compilation of the past 2 years of the Berlin / New York House & Bass masters; Nighshifters. Its been a very impressive two years with so many standout releases from their in house artists like Hostage, AC Slater and Rampage, and they have always outdone themselves with the remix talent deployed on each release bringing in the likes of Jokers of the Scene, Bok Bok, C.R.S.T and many more world class acts, most of which you would have probably already heard or read about here at Electric Zoo. This 16 track comp is a fine selection of Nightshifters' greatest moments, a real loud and proud celebration of the labels spectacular first two years in action, buy it now from Beatport or Juno.

Big Top


The next Nightshifters has just dropped on us this week with Proper Villains taking the stage once again for DJ Donna Summer's rave-tastic label. Title track 'Big Top' (available below) is a rolling bass house masterpiece and its joined by another 3 originals from Proper Villains a package complete with uplifting synths and euphoric piano breakdowns fit for the summer festivals. At Night

Cant keep up with the Nightshifters output this month, as yet another great EP has landed pairing both of Mike Gnacadja's alter egos, Momma's Boy with Mikix The Cat. With three originals fusing tribal percussion, rave infusions and peak-time banger potential, and once again a smorgasbord of remixes from Dubbel Dutch, DJ Donna Summer, Supabeatz, Act Yo Age and Sovngaer this is another Nightshifters release with something for everyone. 'At Night' by Momma's Boy and Mikix The Cat is out now on Nightshifters and available from Juno.

Bumble

Nightshifters are really spoling us this month with the release of their second entirely FREE EP. Philly Based Rx of the Subdivision Bass collective has come up with 'Bumble', an EP that has the trademark heavy bass and genre exploration you can always count on Nightshifters for, and could be put somewhere between the lines of nu-step and chip-tune. As always a whole host of remix talent has been brought along for the ride with impressive remixes from label head DJ Donna Summer and upcoming talent Nate Day, Tony Rocky Horror and a 7 minute arty dubstep epic from Nifian. Theres also a disturbing/brilliant video for this track by Bad American which "Picks up where the Lawnmower Man left off and goes where Dire Straights’ 'Money for Nothing' feared to tread!".

So Nightshifters had an awesome first year in 2009, and here they are back in action in 2010 with label head Jason Forrest aka DJ Donna Summer providing a brand new EP which is sure to please the masses. Bass is the main focus on this EP but DJDS explores many other areas of house and dubstep in his five original tracks and remixes from Bok Bok, Noise Floor Crew, Sonido Del Principe and Hostage. Essential Hostage

Last week saw Hostage join Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1's prestigious Essential Mix with both DJs performing live from Edinburgh on Friday. Top Labels Of 2009
Deciding the top artists or tracks of 2009 would be way too difficult for me, I personally saw a big change in the niche genres I was following and playing, and my eyes have certainly been opened to some fantastic new sounds and innovators this year. So without having to trawl through too much music here's a summary of my favorite labels this year as well as some mp3s highlighting my picks from their releases. Might not be too many surprises in there for regular readers.




05. Mad Decent


Diplo's very own and now well established label just has to be in the top 5 for me this year. If not only for L-Vis 1990's debut Mad Decent release 'United Groove', which rapidly took over the world like the lyrics imply and rose to the top of everyone's charts, but this year saw more fantastic releases from Diplo & Blaqstarr, Jaimie Fanatic, Buraka Som Sistema, Maluca and it would be wrong not to mention the insane Major Lazer output that has pumped everyone over the past few months. 04. Hotflush Recordings

I know its late, but only this year have I honestly really got into any sort of Dubstep at all and its labels like Hotflush Recordings that have managed to opened my eyes. Unable to get into the intense wobbles of Dubstep in 2008, I've discovered different sides to the genre I didn't know, thanks to the output of Hotflush this year from Pangaea, Mount Kimbie, Untold and of course that iconic debut from Joy Orbison, 'Hyph Mngo' which I think is a safe bet for a lot of people's top tracks of 2009. 03. Hemlock Recordings

Along the same lines as Ive already said for Hotflush, Untold's own imprint Hemlock Recordings has certainly caught my attention this year, a label with clear aims of innovation, run by one of the leading innovators in British music right now. After just over a year in business Hemlock has so far mainly been an output for Untold's new music including his impressive 'Gonna Work Out Fine' double 12" EP, but this year has also seen releases from Fantastic Mr Fox & Rich Reason and an incredibly well received debut from James Blake who also returned later in the year with a ground breaking remix of Untold's 'Stop What You're Doing'. 02. Nightshifters

The work DJ Donna Summer and Jubilee have done with this label should not be ignored, and this hard work has ensured that Nightshifters has gone from strength to strength this year. With each release more impressive than the last and intense backing from some of the best remixers in the scene, its been a big year for this digital only label with huge releases from its core artists AC Slater, Hostage, Rob Threezy, Rampage as well as drops from Udachi & Jubilee and even a Free EP from DJ P.O.L Style. 01. Sound Pellegrino

This might not be much of a surprise, considering that pretty much every single Sound Pellegrino release has been covered on the blog. Run by the Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team of Orasmic & Teki Latex this digital only division of Institubes has now seen 9 releases in the short time its had this year, thats almost 1 per month for us lucky, lucky consumers. I for one anxiously await each release, and the artists taken on board by Orgasmic & Teki have all been hand picked from the cream of the crop, with Zombie Disco Squad, Harvard Bass, Renaissance Man, Momma's Boy, Gucci Vump and L-Vis 1990 and more all putting out exceptional EPs in this labels magnificent first year run. Valhalla

Possibly Nightshifters biggest release to date 'Valhalla' by Hostage finally gets its release today. Not only chock-a-block full of original epic efforts from the Scottish star, this release comes backed with some awesome remixes from Chicago legend Angel Alanis with his deep house cut, some Baltimore bass touches from Rampage, some bouncy juke from Chrissy Muderbot and the ravetatstic monster from Momma's Boy. This is an epic release, with Hostage taking each of his tracks in different directions, and the remix talent taking things further afield with their interpretations, but the proof is in the pudding so buy it now! 'Valhalla' by Hostage is out now on Nightshifters and available to download from Beatport now.
